The answers travellers look for before buying.
Can I use the same eSIM QR code on two phones?
No. Each code downloads one profile to one device and is then spent. If you need data on a second phone, you need a second plan — there is no way to duplicate a profile across handsets.
What do I do if I deleted my eSIM by accident?
Contact your provider and ask whether they can reissue the profile. Many can, though policies and any reinstallation fee vary. Do not keep retrying the original code — it will keep returning the "eSIM QR already used" error.
Does manual eSIM activation work as well as scanning?
Yes. The QR code is only a delivery method for the SM-DP+ address and activation code, so entering them by hand produces an identical profile. It is often faster if you have the email open on the same phone.
Why did my QR code scan but the download fail?
Almost always a connectivity issue. Captive-portal Wi-Fi, an active VPN or a weak signal will interrupt the download. Reconnect to a reliable network, restart the phone and try again — the code usually remains valid if nothing was installed.
Should I install my eSIM before or after I land?
Before, on Wi-Fi you trust. The profile stays inactive until you enable it, and installing early means any problem is solved at home rather than in an arrivals hall. Background on how profiles behave is in our explainer on what an eSIM is and how it works.
The phone says my eSIM QR code is invalid. Is the plan lost?
Usually not. "Invalid", "expired" and "already used" are frequently the same underlying condition: the profile has been downloaded once and the code is spent. If you never successfully installed it, contact the provider — they can normally reissue. If you installed it and then deleted it, reissuing is provider-dependent and not guaranteed, which is why deleting a profile mid-trip is the one action to avoid.
Is my phone eSIM compatible if it has a SIM tray?
Quite possibly, yes. Most eSIM compatible phones still include a physical tray, so its presence tells you nothing either way. The *#06# EID check is the reliable test.
Does my phone support eSIM if it is more than five years old?
It might. An iPhone XR from 2018 is eSIM compatible, while some 2024 budget Androids are not. Flagship status at launch predicts support far better than age does.
